Called Rubellite because the deepest shades appear Ruby Red. The darker reddish colors tend to have more natural inclusions than the other Tourmaline colors because they are formed near the center of the crystal pocket and receive more stress and pressure during formation. Eye clean Rubellite is one of the most expensive of the Tourmalines. Since most Rubellite has visible inclusions. Clean Rubellite is very rare, so if you see a super clean stone it's probably a radiated Pink Tourmaline or a Rhodolite Garnet. Red and pink Tourmalines come in many different shades from palest Baby Blush-pink to a bold pink and a deep ruby red. But only a selected few of these are called Rubellite. The name is derived from the Latin term "rubellus” which means reddish. This exceptionally beautiful gemstone shows a vivid color. While generally colored gemstones in good qualities are expected to be almost free of inclusions, such imperfections are tolerated for Rubellite, even welcomed to some extent, since they make the stone more interesting. Of course, this assumes that the inclusions are small and do not interfere with the light refraction in the stone, In any case, a Rubellite with small and fine inclusions will be more valuable than a stone displaying clearly visible inclusions.
The gemstone Tourmaline is the official birthstone for October as adopted by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912. It also the tradidional birthstone for October, the stone for the Zodiac sign of Leo, and the accepted gem for the 8th wedding anniversary.

Cat's Eye Tourmaline exhibits a "cat;s eye" effect similar to what is commonly seen in tiger's eye cabochons. Chrome Tourmaline is colored by chromium resulting in a beautiful green stone that is often confused with emerald or the tsavorite garnet. Indicolite is a dark blueish black stone. The Paraiba tourmaline is a bright neon-blue and Rubellite is a deep reddish purple stone. Schorl is the name given to black tourmalines which are the most commonly found tourmalines.

I am Tourmaline. I am every color of the rainbow. Sometimes I am serene and pastel. Sometimes I feel like celebrating, and I display bold, brilliant colors. Sometimes I am festive, and I combine more than one color. The people of ancient Ceylon called me "turmali," the Sinhalese word for "more colors."
For centuries I have adorned the jewels of royalty. The Empress Dowager Tz'u Hsi, the last empress of China, valued my rich pink colors above all other gemstones.
Vivid reds, hot pinks, verdant greens and blues abound in this marvelous gem variety. Earth tones as varied as a prairie sunset are readily available. Not only does Tourmaline occur in a spectacular range of colors, but it also combines those colors in a single gemstone called "bi-color" or "parti-color" Tourmaline. One color combination with a pink center and a green outer rim called "watermelon" Tourmaline, is cut in thin slices similar to its namesake.
Tourmalines are available in faceted or cabochon cuts and a range of sizes and shapes. They are mined in many parts of the world including Brazil, Afghanistan, East Africa and the United States. They share birthstone status with Opal for the month of October.
